Describe the room/project and how it fulfilled your client’s plans for the space.
A tired kitchen was cramping the style (literally and figuratively) for a busy mom of three. The family of five had been in the house for about 12 years and anticipate staying 25-30 more years, so the space needs to work as the kids grow up and the family evolves. They entertain frequently, so a more open-concept space was desired to allow family and friends to be together without isolating mom, who does most of the cooking. A wall was removed and a generous island was planned to replace the narrow peninsula. Storage was added under the stairs by making the drawers extra deep. It’s a favorite trick of mine!
Did you run into any challenges with this specific project?
No big issues, however, removing the walls affected the ceiling, electrical and ductwork. This affected the floor, which we planned to retain. It’s made of the heart of pine and making sure it could be matched and blended beautifully was a priority.
Tell us about yourself and your firm, your design style and/or passion/inspiration?
Delicious Kitchens recently celebrated our 10th anniversary, and I have been a certified kitchen designer since 2001. I love adding unexpected special touches specific to each client (no cookie-cutter design here). I listen carefully and curate the new kitchen or bathroom components and layout ideally for the client and their lifestyle.
Where do you go to get new ideas and inspiration?
TRAVEL! I love to explore. Whether it's historic European architecture or nature-inspired, the trips I take always re-charge my creative batteries and inspire my designs.
Which design trends are you most excited about in 2020?
I love seeing blue and the infusion of color. As a designer in a coastal community, we have plenty of ocean and nautical influences, so this is natural for us!
What’s the best interior design lesson you have learned?
Listen. Not only to the client, but my instincts. If it doesn’t sound quite right, it probably isn’t.
